Promise/Purity Rings

I am considering of getting myself a promise/purity ring... One for virginity and another for soberness. Sigh I did a whole night of research on it o.o like what kind of ring works and how to work the vow and all that. Promise ring is just a ring to remind yourself of a promise between you and another person. A purity ring is to remind yourself to stay abstinence until marriage. In this case I am vowing to my family, friends, & God.
I went and asked on yahoo answers of how the ring works and whats up && all that good stuff o.o YAHOO ANSWERS FTW!
Someone mentioned that the ring doesnt do anything, its still a promise with or without the ring. Wow >.> got me thinking.... Do I really need to rely on an object to make a promise? Isn't that promise supposed to be just me and whoever that promise is to? Why am I putting that promise onto an object?
